Civil Settlements Reached in Death of Resident at Arizona Boys Ranch

The mother of a 16-year-old resident who died at Boys Ranch in 1998 reached civil settlements totaling over $1 million with the State of Arizona, the facility, and Sacramento County. An autopsy and reports indicated the youth died from an undiagnosed infection after staff members allegedly forced him to perform rigorous exercise while accusing him of malingering. Criminal child abuse charges were subsequently filed against three facility staff members, and placements and funding were suspended by California authorities.
