This work belongs to everyone fighting for kids in residential programs. Take the data to your legislator, your newsroom, your research or your own organizing.

  • Data and writing: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. Credit Kids Over Profits (kidsoverprofits.org), say what you changed, and share what you build from it under the same license.
  • Code: the whole site is open source under the GNU GPL v2 or later. See the source on GitHub.
  • Not ours to license: news articles, court filings, state inspection reports and photos belong to their authors or are public records. The downloads link to them rather than copy them, except the inspection report text below.

Facilities and operators

  • Facilities

    Every program, school, ranch, wilderness program and residential facility in the database: names, status, type, address, years open, operators and accreditations. The JSON file also carries the full facility record (published survivor testimony only).

Good to know

  • What is left out, and why. Records still under review, anything a survivor has not agreed to publish, the names of survivors in news records, referrers' phone numbers and emails, and who submitted or reviewed each record.
  • Joining the files. facility_id in the link, lawsuit and news files matches id in facilities. In the CSV files a list is written as a; b; c; the JSON files keep lists as lists and carry the full facility and operator records.
