First-Ever National Survey Finds Forgotten Graves of Incarcerated Children

A Georgetown University report identified 40 burial sites across the United States containing the remains of more than 1,000 children who died while in state custody. The findings highlight systemic failures in juvenile reform schools, including inadequate care, punitive practices, and insufficient record‑keeping. The report calls for memorialization and reforms to prevent future loss of life.
