In August 1986 New Jersey prosecutors investigated KIDS of Bergen County for possible mistreatment, people held against their will, intimidation and physical abuse.source

In 1990 twenty Bergen County officials investigated abuse at KIDS of Bergen County; in 1989 prosecutors had escorted multiple children out on two occasions.source

New Jersey launched a Medicaid fraud investigation in 1999 after finding numerous counts of insurance fraud.source

2003 Lawsuit
A 2001 suit against Newton and his psychologists for $4.5 million was won, and in 2003 a $6.5 million settlement was won for a former client who spent 13 years at Kids of Bergen County and North Jersey.source
