Reporting abuse in Wyoming

Wyoming reports abuse to the county field office where it happened rather than to a statewide hotline, with 911 as the around-the-clock route. It also has a Department of Family Services ombudsman who takes complaints about the Department's own handling of a case, which is the escalation route when a report goes nowhere.

Time limits in Wyoming: a general guide

This was correct as far as we could tell when we checked it on 28 September 2026. Laws on time limits change often, sometimes every legislative session, so some of what follows may have been updated since. It is a starting point, not legal advice: please check with a lawyer before relying on any date here. A time limit on a lawsuit or a criminal charge is also not a time limit on telling someone, and most of the places listed below will still take a report.

Time limits for abuse of a child often run from the survivor's 18th birthday, or from when they came to understand what happened, rather than from the day the program closed. Many states have lengthened them, removed them for child sexual abuse, or reopened claims that had already expired. A criminal charge, a lawsuit and a licence complaint each have their own time limit, so one having passed does not necessarily mean the others have.

Lawsuits

Physical abuse or injury: One year for assault, battery and false imprisonment. Four years for negligence and other personal injury. Wyo. Stat. § 1-3-105(a)(v)(B)-(C) (one year); § 1-3-105(a)(iv)(C) (four years)
If it happened before you turned 18: For someone injured as a child, the deadline is three years after turning 18 (age 21), or the normal period if that ends later. Wyoming has no longer deadline for physical abuse of a child. Its special rule in § 1-3-105(b) covers sexual assault only. Wyo. Stat. § 1-3-114
If the program was run by or for the government: To sue the state or a local government, first present a written, itemized claim within two years of the act (or two years after discovery, in limited cases). Child sexual abuse: The civil SOL for CSA, trafficking, and CSAM claims against all defendants is age 26 with a 3-year discovery rule. CHILD USA's summary

Criminal charges

Physical child abuse: No time limit. Wyoming has no statute of limitations for any crime, so child abuse can be charged at any time. No criminal statute of limitations in Wyoming; Ridinger v. State, 2021 WY 4, ¶ 14, 478 P.3d 1160 (quoting Phillips v. State, 835 P.2d 1062, 1069 (Wyo. 1992))
