Jury finds corrections officers liable in Cedric Lofton’s in-custody death
A federal jury found five corrections officers liable in the in-custody death of 17-year-old Cedric Lofton. The jury awarded $8.3 million to Lofton's estate. The incident occurred when Lofton was taken to the Sedgwick County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center after a mental health crisis, where he was physically restrained by corrections officers for 39 minutes, resulting in his death. The jury determined that the corrections officers used excessive force and failed to intervene.
