Rules and practices

Practices

  • Restraint
  • Seclusion or isolation
  • Level system
  • Forced medication
  • Limits on contact with family

Treatment methods

  • Behavior modification

What people who were there remember

What people who were at Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, or had a child there, told us on our questions page. Under each line are their own words.

Rules

  • Most rules were very arbitrary and unstated outside of avoiding attacks and following staff orders. Outside of things like "don't attack people" and "follow staff's orders," most rules were very arbitrary and unstated. A former resident, answering on Kids Over Profits' questions page, November 2026

Punishments

  • Punishments were arbitrary, with staff showing favoritism and inconsistently penalizing residents for the same actions. There were a few blatant problems like a staff punishing a kid for "disrespect" (and on Christmas of all days) just for mildly arguing with said staff while allowing those she favorited to get away with A LOT and even pausing punishments for them sometimes. Sometimes two kids would do something and only one of them would be punished for it, sometimes even when the non-punished one obviously acted worse. A former resident, answering on Kids Over Profits' questions page, November 2026
  • Residents received punishments called X-hours consisting of worksheets with tasks required to be completed, during which they remained on loss of privileges until finished or the time passed. The main punishment was an "X-hour," where X was a number ranging from 1 to 8. It was a worksheet with tasks you were required to do, and the tasks were supposed to take X number of hours total. If you finished all of them, you'd remain on a LOP until X hours had passed, and if you didn't do the required tasks you remained on a LOP indefinitely until you did them. A former resident, answering on Kids Over Profits' questions page, November 2026
  • Loss of Privileges was a standalone punishment lasting for 24 hours where residents were not allowed to do almost anything outside of required activities. The other main punishment was a LOP, Loss of Privileges. A LOP lasted for 24 hours (as a standalone punishment - when acting as part of an X-hour it could be shorter), and it meant you weren't allowed to do almost anything outside of required activities. A former resident, answering on Kids Over Profits' questions page, November 2026
  • A No Peer Interactions punishment prohibited residents from talking to specific peers under threat of receiving the same punishment. There was also the No Peer Interactions punishment. That one's pretty self-explanatory, and if people not on the punishment talked to those on it they'd get No Peer Interactions and possibly the rest of the punishment the other person had (regardless of what it was for) too. A former resident, answering on Kids Over Profits' questions page, November 2026

Restraint, isolation and transport

  • Staff used prone restraints where two staff members laid on either side of the resident holding an arm and a leg, and sometimes a third staff member was added behind the resident. Usually kids were put into prone restraints, specifically one where there was no weight on our back but our arms and legs were restrained. Usually 2 staff did the restraining, 1 laying on either side of you and holding both an arm and a leg, but sometimes they had a third staff behind you since it was pretty easy to get your leg out even from experienced staff members. A former resident, answering on Kids Over Profits' questions page, November 2026
  • Staff used a restraint called Tripod where two staff grabbed the resident's arms and sat with their backs to them without restraining their legs. The other main restraint they did was called "Tripod." It was where 2 staff grabbed your arms and sat with their backs to you. Your legs weren't restrained. A former resident, answering on Kids Over Profits' questions page, November 2026

Searches

  • They did not use outright strip-searches, but they required pocket checks, including turning out pockets, dumping shoes and socks, and snapping bra straps each time they returned to the lodge. YBGR didn't use outright strip-searches, but they did make us do pocket checks (turning out our pockets, dumping out our shoes and socks, snapping our bra straps, and possibly other things done with our clothes on that I can't remember) every time we returned to the lodge (what's more commonly known as a unit).
